[ cheers and applause ] welcome to "late night with jimmy fallon," everybody. let's get right to the news. thank you, guys. let's get right to the news. president obama has been talking about education all day, and this morning the "today" show, obama said that he supports having a longer school year. in response, sasha and malia announced they support sarah palin. [ laughter ] ridiculous. and check this out, a new poll found that only 5% of americans think the public school system is working well, while the other 95% think it could be working "gooder." [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] could be "gooder."

listen to this, you guys, bill clinton recently told cnn that republicans had eight years to dig the country into a hole. and the democrats need two more years to dig us out. meanwhile, those chilean miners were like, "hey, we're still here. so how about using a different analogy for the next few months, okay?" [ laughter ] >> steve: whoo! that's what happens. >> jimmy: that's what happens. hey, you guys, it was 113 degrees in los angeles today, the city's hottest temperature ever recorded, 113. it was so hot, heidi montag was like "if i could still sweat, i would be soaked right now." [ laughter ] i just read about this -- paris -- [ laughter ] i like how they always do that. in case you don't know what 7 is. they count this much. this much -- i just read about this. paris hilton has settled a lawsuit with hallmark for making a greeting card with her catchphrase, "that's hot." she's also checking every day to make sure hallmark's not using her other catchphrase, "that's not mine. it belongs to a friend." [ cheers and applause ] "it's not mine. i was holding it for her." and finally, this is kind of a local story, it was hard getting around new york city this weekend because of the service changes on 18 different subway lines. in fact, it was so confusing, most people just gave up and peed in a bathroom. ladies and gentlemen, we have a great show! give it up for the roots!

[ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, that's good enough. i think that counts. yeah. >> no, no, no, i should say it's a novel by kazuo ishiguro who wrote "remains of the day," and this incredible british/japanese novelist who wrote this incredibly soulful and difficult story about what it is to be alive and the very short amount of time that we all have and how we choose to use it. it's a wonderful musing on life and death and love and creativity. that's so austere and kind of ernest. >> jimmy: it's very neurotic.
